Action Henk Review

Ass-thetically Pleasing!

Action Henk is what happens when Toy Story meets Micro Machines. It’s that Sonic game you’ve been craving since the 2D days, but rather than being a blue hedgehog, you’re an overweight Action Man.
With over 70 levels to butt-slide across, they definitely have the ass-thetics down to the letter.
With over 70 levels to butt-slide across, they definitely have the ass-thetics down to the letter.
The protagonist is a fat Action Man toy who is more than a little past his prime and hanging on to his glory days. Unfortunately, after a nefarious doctor makes off with your “Toy of the Year” Award, you go on a mission to navigate 70+ courses and reclaim your glory.
It’s amazing how much fun can be wrung out of the simple controls of this game: running, jumping and butt-sliding your way to victory. The physics are a little wonky here and there, but it doesn’t stop the game from being enjoyable. The art style is hilarious, especially the character designs. One character in particular looks like her plastic surgeon (no pun intended) stapled forehead.
That said, Action Henk is undeniably frustrating. I played the first set of levels for what seemed like a hundred times. The game is highly unforgiving of mistakes and anything less than perfection is frowned upon. The team that made this game is highly appropriately named RageSquid since the whole game had me screaming. To give you an idea of how incredibly painful it can be, I allowed my niece to play it and less than ten minutes later there were tears and fireworks.

Shadowrun: Boston Lockdown

Shadowrun Chronicles, which was formerly known as Shadowrun Online, is a neon drench MMORPG that you definitely won’t want to miss. This grim sci-fi adventure is available right now on Steam for the price of $39.99 (or $59.99 if you’re willing to go deluxe), but is it worth it? Way back in 2012, this game was funded on Kickstarter. Cliffhanger Productions received a phenomenal $558,863 thanks to 6,003 backers. While it has been delayed for quite some time, theShadowrun Online game does the original pen and paper game proud. It is exciting, and the gameplay will keep you on your toes.
The game is very visually appealing, though there is very little background noise from characters.
The game is very visually appealing, though there is very little background noise from characters.
Visually, Boston Lockdown is very appealing. The game is set in the year 2076, where apparently mankind has given up on green energy and just said “I want everything made of metal and broken dreams with a side of orphan tears.” The futuristic steampunk dystopia is reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII’s Midgar, and there’s even a blue naked female NPC who made me choke on my coffee when I thought Jenova had returned. In all seriousness, it looks fantastic and it’s a fun environment to run around in. The landscape definitely compliments a distinctly nihilistic theme that exists within the game. There is good variety in the scenery; we get a look at a more modernized industrial city as well as slums and all the shades in between.
The characters have quite the varied design, but this is to be expected since the game’s character creation is pretty extensive. In the very beginning, you get to choose a name and race. My personal preference was the elf, but there were also humans, dwarves, and trolls. Each race has different advantages though I don’t think they rock, paper, scissors each other like Pok√©mon starters would. There are also different professions to choose from. If you hadn’t guessed by the title, a lot of what you do is of a mildly insidious nature. There’s a lot of personalization that can be done. I managed to pretty much recreate a dwarfish Skrillex while playing about. There are also some sweet accessories such as goggles or a very mafia looking cigar. Overall, it’s a great element that completely sucks away hours of time before you ever even start the game. It also has quite the intriguing mechanic to give your character flaws, which I thought was a nice touch

Final Fantasy VII Remake E3 2015

It’s finally happening… This isn’t a dream or a result of Mako poisoning, this is real life and I might die if I don’t catch my breath soon. Final Fantasy VII is getting a HD remake for PlayStation 4. Not a rubbish port or a some stupid mobile edition, a genuine reworking from the ground up. The joyful screaming has just about subsided long enough for me to write this, so I will type quickly since I swear by the Shiva summon it shall return.
Final Fantasy VII
If you remember this your childhood was awesome.
According to the gaming website Silconera, the original Final Fantasy VII game is getting a HD remake and reworking for PlayStation 4. The characters are going to be changed to either their Dissidia or their Advent Children designs and the game won’t tell us to attack while the scorpion’s tail is up! Earlier in the month Square Enix was talking about a ‘Secret Game’ they were planning to release at E3. At the time, I was entirely sarcastic when I said “Maybe it will be that long awaited Final Fantasy VII remake” but now it seems as though I may have been right.
At the moment, this is still a rumor, but Square Enix will probably issue a statement soon, either tomorrow at their press conference or at E3. All we can do is hold our breath and equip our chocobo lures (+5 luck) and hope, no slash that, PRAY, that this is true. Still I have been digging and it honestly seems legit, it seems too good to be true, but I have nothing to go against it other than that.

Honestly, many people say that Final Fantasy VII is overrated and I entirely agree. It was poorly translated, had terrible graphics, the love story was ‘meh’ and at this point the biggest spoiler has already been revealed to the world…

A Bloodstained Legacy

With nearly 65,000 backers and over $5.5M raised Bloodstained: Rituals Of The Night has become the most funded Kickstarter video games in history and seems like it is guaranteed to make history itself. The game is expected to be released around May 2017 on multiple platforms from PC to Vita.
Bloodstained is the spiritual successor to the Castlevania games. Leader of the project, Igarashi, leftKonami for various reasons including concerns for his continued employment with the company. Probably a wise decision considering Konami‘s daft decision making of late. Many fans still longed for him to continue to make more Castlevania games and he too wanted to create more. He approached many companies, but despite the weight that his name held in the gaming community he couldn’t find anyone to help him.
Miriam of Bloostained
Miriam is the protagonist of the game
Castlvania games have a history of poor releases outside of Japan from Vampire Killer toLord of Shadows 2. However, Igarashi eventually found some potential investors who said they would invest if they saw that there was a demand for the game. With that in mind, Igarashi made a Kickstarter that aimed to raise the remaining 10% of the funding goal, which was $500,000.

Oculus Rift Partners With Microsoft

Isn’t it strange that a decade ago virtual reality seemed like something that belonged strictly in science fiction? Now it is almost upon us in the form of the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus. We just found out that the Oculus has partnered with Microsoft Windows and the Xbox in order to put it in even more direct competition with Sony’s Project Morpheus.
On Thursday, A pre-E3 press event was held in San Francisco. CEO of Oculus VR and Microsofts’ Xbox leader both got a chance to speak about the partnership. The Oculus Rift will run natively on Windows 10, a new OS that is being released in July. A few claims have been made that it will be one of the best gaming OS’ for PC gamers, but we’ll have to wait and see about that.
The Oculus Rift headset itself is going to be released in the first quarter of 2016 and is to be bundled with an Xbox One remote and adapter. While the Oculus Rift itself will still mainly be used for playing PC games, it has now also been given the ability to stream Xbox One games. The streaming will only work within a set distance similar to how the Vita works with the Playstation. Some games that have been mentioned as compatible for streaming include Halo and Sunset Overdrive.

Dota You Know You're A Millionaire?

The world of eSports seems to be growing at an unprecedented rate. ESport is a lot more accessible than many other kinds of sports and doesn’t require haven’t to go to a pitch in all kinds of weather to train. With that in mind, I can’t really say that I find the news of Dota 2’s annual tournament having a prize pool of over 12 Million dollars. After all, video games, in general, are a lot more fun to watch than regular sports and it’s a lot easier to train to be a pro.
Dota 2 Rekindling Soul Update 2
I’m sure at this late stage we have all heard of Valves highly rated and highly successful game, Dota 2. In case you haven’t it is a huge MMO with nearly 8million players from all around the globe and endless servers to support it. The game is available on all of the major PC platforms and commands a huge fan base.
The game was originally released a few years back in 2013. Since then it has been nominated for numerous awards and inspired various animations and YouTube channels dedicated to it. Still it’s crowning jewel is an annual PVP event known as the Dota 2 Championship. Every year this event pits teams of five players against each other to find out who is the very best.
The prize pool for the contest is funded by players. They can buy special packs that have enhancements for their characters and the money goes into the prize fund. This year the prize fund has reached a phenomenal 12 million dollars and it is still rapidly rising. To put this in perspective this is more than a lot of major sports would put as their grand prize and you could buy a large mansion for it. It isn’t just players who donate. The Dota fanbase spreads out into many areas with over 134 million people watching streams of battles on Dota.

PlayStation E3 Leaks 2015

This is just a little collection of  the currently known E3 leaks for Sony PlayStation.
The Price Drop: Around the 25th of May we first caught wind of this little tidbit. According to this leak, the PlayStation 4 will be dropping in price by $50 and the PS Vita by $110. This will leave them priced at $349 and $89 respectively. It is theorised that this is because the PS Vita Oled Version became a legacy platform and because there is a new PlayStation 4 coming out. Read more about this leak and its sources here.
New PlayStation 4 Model: A far more recent leak that only surface around the first of June. Sony registered two new PlayStation 4 models that are lighter, slightly smaller and have 1 Terabyte of memory as opposed to 500 Gigabytes. So it seems likely that news of these models will be coming to E3. To read more about this leak click here

Play As Harley Quinn In Upcoming Arkham Game

Harley Quinn is beyond a shadow of a doubt, my favorite Batman character. I’m not too keen on her whiny voice, but her actual character is something I find intriguing. I’m sure we have all heard the story about her being pregnant before Batman decides to beat her up and unknowingly kill off Joker’s prodigy in the womb. I am kinda hoping for some sort of expansion on that plotline. Especially, finding out if it was all just in her mind or if it really truly happened that way.

Square Enix To Reveal A Secret Game At E3

Exciting news has been leaked about Square Enix’s E3 plans. According to the website IGN, Square Enix is going to reveal a ‘secret title’ they have been working on, at this years E3. Perhaps it will be a much sought after Final Fantasy VII remake? I doubt it, but I can live in hope.
This exciting news was leaked by IGN since they will be sponsoring this press event. Apparently invitations were sent out via email, inviting people to celebrate the release of this mysterious secret game. They haven’t given us much information at all. We don’t know anything about the game at all yet, but we can do some elimination to figure out what it’s not.

Nintendo Land Coming to the Real World

Nintendo announced today that it is teaming up with Universal Parks and Resorts to build Nintendo-themed attractions. Perhaps this adventurous news was prompted by Nintendo finally making a profit since 2011 thanks to the Pokemon Omega Ruby, Alpha Saphire and Super Smash Bros. Nintendo reported earning $208 million for the fiscal year.

Either way I have been waiting for a Nintendo Themepark since Pokemon Red and to me, the idea makes a whole lot of sense. Nintendo as a company is usually very focused on merchandise. Just think of the Amiibos that currently are out of stock since supply can’t meet demand, or the endless accessories like all these Gameboy connection cables dangling over my head. With all that in mind just think what could be done with Pokemon, Zelda, and Mario. I really want to see a Rainbow Road Rollercoaster, Pokemon Safari, and a Zelda shooting game.

Universal has theme parks in California, Florida, Osaka, and Singapore. I’m sure Europeans everywhere (myself included) are bawling that they won’t be able to visit easily. That said Nintendo seems to be looking forward to a good year, they plan on releasing a handful of smartphone games, a whole new line of Amiibo figures and now this theme park. This is definitely an upturn from what Nintendo seemed to be last year with it’s moderate 3DS sales and WiiU sales

It’s interesting that they partnered with Universal, considering both companies tried to sue each other way back in the 1980s over the whole Donkey Kong vs King Kong issue. It sounds like it’s all water under the bridge now though.

This is definitely an upturn from what Nintendo seemed to be last year with it’s moderate 3DS and Wii U sales. This may be what Nintendo needs to drag itself free of the previous year’s disappointments. At the moment, the theme park still needs to be fleshed out. Hopefully, Nintendo will release a statement to give us an idea when it will be open to the public.

I think it’s great that it isn’t a park created by Nintendo, but by the already reputable Universal. Universal is already a well-known pro at delivering a great experience to the family. With Nintendo’s slippery finances in recent years, having the rides in the hands of Universal will probably help ensure the parks longevity.

It isn’t even the first time Universal has teamed up with a video game company if you remember the horrific Resident Evil attraction courtesy of Capcom. I’m sure at least at the start there won’t be anything as extreme as Yoshi invading the Jurassic Park ride, but Universal has been consistently outdoing itself for the last 15 years. Nintendo is a big company so I’m sure we can safely assume there will be at least one interactive ride like the Toy Story ride Disney has.

What rides would you love to see?

Personally, a Mario Sunshine themed Water Ride would be enough to make me swim the ocean. or maybe Splatoon water ride, but I’m interested what attractions would make you go?

A Moment of Silence for Silent Hill

With recent rumors that the new and promising Silent Hill installment is canceled and the main reason I give Konami the time of day is leaving I couldn't help, but rant about this.

What's The Story?

You probably remember a fantastic game demo known only as P.T. that despite the fact you were just running around an endless looping hallway, was genuinely terrifying. I really enjoyed P.T. and I even watched a few playthroughs and realized that it interacted differently with other players. Overall it was very impressive and atmospheric so when I found out it was actually a teaser for a new Silent Hill game I immediately started googling prices of Playstation 4s so that I wouldn't have to steal my friends sofa like I had for P.T. (I think I wore out my welcome when 'Gouge it out!' became my catch phrase of the evening).

So you can imagine the gut-punch when I heard that it was canceled.
P.T. disappeared from the PlayStation Store, Hideo Kojima's podcasts were put on hiatus... What was going on. Next thing I hear Kojima is leaving the project, I hadn't realized that Kojima's production logo had disappeared off the Konami site way back in March. I held out hoping it was all an elaborate hoax like PlayStation Flow. Unfortunately, it seems as though my and other fans of Silent Hill, have had their hopes shredded and fed to Robbie the Rabbit. What is the evidence you may ask? Well Konami has issued this statement:
Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles, however the embryonic ‘Silent Hills’ project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued.
In terms of Kojima and Del Toro being involved, discussions on future Silent Hill projects are currently underway, and please stay tuned for further announcements.
And on top of that little nugget, Director Guillermo del Toro (who you may remember from Pan's Labyrinth), apparently said "not gonna happen"
Konami's Q&A

What Does This Mean?

Well, it is a huge kick in the teeth for Silent Hill fans everywhere and has sparked the #boycottKonami which I will be participating in. Let's have a moment of honesty here, Silent Hill has been decaying in Konami's care with each new installment. The survival horror genre is a niche that isn't the most profitable endeavor for the most part. With each installment we have seen the game pushed further and further from it's survival horror roots. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Silent Hill: Book of Memories, but the game was not a Silent Hill game it just had it in the title. That's the problem, Silent Hill is being twisted to appeal to the masses, but in the process losing what made us love it in the first place. The first Silent Hill was scary and atmospheric, but this has not carried over well. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was a good game, but it was watered down. There was no blood and while I'm not exactly keen on being hugged by a weird naked man monster, I've been through worse at pulic schools.

Should we Boycott Konami?

Since the first rumors of Silent Hill's cancellation were spreading there were two very common messages: 'Don't mess with Silent Hill fans' and '#BoycottKonami' It is unclear at this moment if the hashtag will take off, but I'm certainly behind it. I'm sick of these companies forgetting that we the consumer do not have to buy their products. While I was looking forward to playing the Phantom Pain (mainly because of that German Shepard with an eye-patch) I'm willing to sacrifice that to show Konami what for. In reality the last Konami game that I really enjoyed was New Little King's Story but I can't really think of any Konami game other than that.
One must remember that we hold the power over these companies. They have een getting far too complacent lately, I was seeing red when Square Enix pulled there little Final Fantasy VII remake stunt and really I should have taken a stand then too. The only reason I didn't is because they have consistantly made my favorite games and animes. Not an excuse I know.
Personally, I'm boycotting Konami because I am sick and tired of their rubbish and I really love Silent Hill. They asked for this storm and we'd be rude not to deliver.

5 Reasons Why Waterville is Wonderful

I have travelled quite a bit in my time, I've been to Turkey, France, Scotland and Wales, but when I came to Ireland my heart was stolen by the beautiful coastal town known as Waterville. It is a very small coastal town located in the South-west of Ireland and it is an absolute treasure and here are 5 Reasons Why.

Beautiful Beaches and a Luscious Lake

Waterville has some beautiful beaches. They are plenty of stony rocks to scamper over, but also plenty of sand to play with. During the summer, it is wonderfully warm and there's nothing quite like stretching out like a cat on some warm sand. When it's cold or the weather is rough you can still admire the waves smashing into the beach. There is also a beautiful lake with a family of mute swans on it. It's so tranquil you can sit there for hours and just breath in the rich Kerry air.

Weather Watching And Night Skies

The weather isn't always glorious sun, in fact it's often quite brisk out. However, you cannot deny that the skies in Waterville in any weather are amazing. When rain is imminent the sky turns such a moody grey and makes the black and white buildings in the town accessories to a new dark and mysterious atmosphere. When it is sunny the grass looks so lush you just want to roll around in it! Waterville is part of the Darkskies project, so at night you can see the stars very clearly. I love star gazing in Waterville.

The Fabulous Food and Banter in the Bars

I think most people associate Ireland with drinking and a good time and they aren't wrong to do so. Waterville has a number of great bars and restaurants. I was very amused by one bar in particular. It was called 'The Lobster' and had a huge Lobster clutching a pint of Guinness. The food is also wonderful, I had some amazing ice cream while I was there.

The Friendly Folk

The people in Waterville are very nice and helpful to tourists. Lots of people willing to give directions or point you to the best place to have lunch.

Culture and Festivities

Waterville is crammed with culture. There is an art gallery and a marine exhibition called 'Sea Synergy' and every year there is a Charlie Chaplin film festival and a children's festival. If that wasn't enough excitement for you, there is a little country market and a place called 'Tech Amergin'. Lots of performances are held at the Tech and it has its own sensory garden. The top it all off you can still see the old cable house in Waterville.

Yes, if you are ever travelling in Ireland I recommend stopping in Waterville.

I can not be Charlie

Multiple friends asked me why I go quiet when they hold up their 'I am Charlie' signs...

As someone who has a strong distaste for religion I am expected to jump on the bandwagon and spread as much Islamaphobia as humanly possible and preach about how this is the result of religion.
I can't.
The Official Story is that on the 7th of January 2014, two masked men killed 12 people during their attack on the Charlie Hebdo. The magazine had been posting insulting images that once I saw made me stay away from saying 'Je suis Charlie' because as it turns out, Charlie seems to be an asshole.

Islamaphobia vs Muslim Murders

Islamic religions are often portrayed as violent and sadistic, but a brief glance at their holy book the Qu'ran shows that it doesn't really say anything more outrageous than the Bible. Christians like to say 'but they have to kill the infidels' well yeah, but it says that in the Bible too (Exodus 22:19 NAB, 2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB, Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT, Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT, Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB, Deuteronomy 17:2-5 NLT, Romans 1:24-32 NLT) a lot.

In recent times, the only things you seem to hear about Muslims is how evil they are or that they are terrorists.  How long have you gone without hearing something about 9/11? I scarcely go a week without hearing some mention of it. Pray tell how many times you've heard od Christian acts of terrorism? Not very often I'll bet. That isn't because it doesn't exist, it'll get a brief mention before being hastily pushed to the side. People point to the extremists of these religions and shriek "look they're evil! They killed 12 people, Muslims should be banned! they're inherently violent!" But post KKK we still don't label Christians as anti-black people, I bet most of you reading this have never even heard of the Wisconsin Sikh Temple massacre or the abortion-clinic bombings. It all gets glossed over very nicely so that people like Dr.George Tiller can die nice a quietly without shaking the world view of some Christians.

The reason I am bringing this up, is not by any means to try and say Islam is better than Christianity (Who cares who is the shiniest of two turds?), but to point out the glaring hypocrisy that is staring us in the face.

Conditions to Cultivate Hate

The demonization of Islamic religions has allowed for a situation where the followers are being discriminated openly. People are trying to say that the attack on the Charlie Hebdo magazine is an attack on freedom of speech, but I personally call bullshit right there. If you want to call this 'an attack on freedom of speech' first tell me if you think the fact that 'blackface' is not allowed to be featured in magazines anymore, to be an attack on your freedom of speech. This publication is far from what the glowing report would have you believe and as an anti-theist I still found the covers shockingly abhorrent. For instance one of the covers depicted a Muslim man being shot repeatedly as he holds up a Quran in defence. A caption points to the damaged bullet torn book and in French say 'it can't stop bullets'. Imagine if that Muslim man was an American soldier holding a bible. It would never have gone to print, why?
There would have been a public outcry, the magazine probably would have been shut down or at least heavily fined or even sued. The magazine didn't just attack Muslims, but when it did it hit hard. People defending the magazine have tried to say they attacked all religions, but just looking at the frequency and the shock factor compared to other religions they attacked blows that argument out of the water. The most offensive one I could find about Christianity was a pro-homosexuality piece depicting some bum fun with the Holy Trinity. Which I hardly find comparable to having an unarmed Muslim man shot to death on the cover.

Please don't be fooled into thinking that muslims never spoke out against this publication because they have done, repeatedly. In 2006 there was a failed attempt to sue the magazine for a particularly anti-Islamic cover and in 2011 when yet again they attacked 2011 they had their website hacked. These people went out of their way to bait terrorist extremists. The editor-in-chief was killed in a shooting way back when. These people knew the pot they were stirring, knew the offense they were causing, but they carried on.

I Still Think the Extremists are in the Wrong

I will never say that the victims deserved to die, because I honestly believe it is disproportionate retribution. However, portraying them as innocent or somehow associating them being martyrs of free speech is something I find contemptible. In closing, please do not mistake extremists for Muslims or if you are going to then be fair and judge other religions by their extremists especially your own, unless you're an atheist/wiccan/pagan/deist/pastafarian/buddhist I imagine you'll probably blanch. If you are still going to hold up your 'Je suis Charlie' sign please do one better and add 'Je suis Ahmed' to honor Ahmed Merabet, who sacrificed his life trying to counter the terrorists. Unfortunately, Nothing can sway me at this point to take the side of this hideous publication.

Je ne suis pas Charlie...

I delayed making this article and instead created a video and decided to expand from there.

Leelah was not flawless

I know my video did support Leelah's side of the story, but I really want to make something clear. I do not think Leelah was flawless, the way she committed suicide has probably caused a lot of trauma to the driver of that truck. I always find things twice as tragic when they involve a minor, because Leelah was only a child. We have a habit of romanticizing the dead and not seeing what they did wrong, but I think it is very important that we do not glorify suicide. Leelah isn't the only person who felt this way and some people say that there are many more deserving cases. I agree in ways, but it doesn't matter because this is the one that is getting the attention and this is the one that is provoking change. Her wishes were very clear:
Transgender Equality
Her Death Needs to Mean Something
Fix Society

My Thoughts on the Parents

I mentioned in the video that I personally wasn't condemning the parents, why? They believed they were doing the right thing, religious indoctrination is a powerful thing and I have met people who I imagine Leelah's parents were like. What they did was wrong, but is it just our fault or is it the fault of society that we allow this emotional abuse to thrive? They took away her social media while she was alive, I imagine they probably thought she was seeing this transgender malarkey online and just joining in, but that was a bad decision. This isolated her, there is a whole movement on the internet that shows LGBT people lots of love, without that what was she hearing? The biased opinions of zealous christians treating her like a mistake? No child should ever be treated like a mistake.

Regardless of our opinions

Leelah is now the symbol of the victims of transgender intolerance, we all have a duty to work toward a future where anyone can be what they aspire to be without maltreatment. We have to change the world.

Make it your New Years Resolution to change the world;
Not just for Leelah,
But every single child like her.
